About Marjorie Kauth-Karjala

It is difficult to decide to seek help concerning emotional issues and it is even harder to figure out who to call. What I promise is to work with you to help find solutions. My belief is people have the answers within them but the solutions are hidden. Together we can uncover them, like finding buried treasure. And it is a treasure. It is the good and wise core of each person.

My background is unique. I worked as a journalist for The Ann Arbor News for 17 years before pursuing a new career. Since that decision, I have worked with mothers and babies, troubled families and people struggling with autism. Through volunteer work, I have worked with frail adults, grieving children and grandparents raising their grandchildren.

I am familiar with depression, anxiety, behavior problems, peer relationships and trauma. I am familiar with various therapy techniques but find that finding what works for you is more important I also have a strong spirituality which I share with clients if appropriate.

I enjoy working with children and find them life-giving. My office has a special space for children, with therapeutic games and kid-friendly décor, including a bean bag. Children need to be comfortable when working in therapy and I do my best to create that environment.

I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and also use Internal Family Systems, Play Therapy and Common Factors in my practice.

Personally, I was raised in a large and loving family in Ypsilanti and I have two wonderful sons. Of course, we have the same struggles that all families have: communication problems, time constraints and all the rest. But I believe that skills such as listening and self-reflection can help find solutions to problems and create a safer, more joyful life for everyone.

About Mark Giesler

As a colleague of Marjorie’s, I embrace her philosophy of finding that treasure inside of you. I realize that your “gem” is often there, but covered up by years of bad habits, unfortunate events, or mental health issues beyond your control.

I have a Master’s in Social Work and PhD in Higher Education Leadership from the University of Nebraska. Previous to my current position as Professor of Social Work at Saginaw Valley State University, I worked as an in-home family preservationist, a child/adolescent therapist, and a substance abuse counselor. I also have personal experience in fostering and adopting children.

My specialty is mental health and one of my goals in this profession is to decrease the stigma around it. Seeking help for a condition or issue that is causing you pain is far from a sign of weakness. In fact, it is the first step in your journey toward finding and maintaining strength.

One of my favorite authors is Anne LaMotte. Something she wrote once sticks in my mind: “We are all just walking each other home.”

I look forward to taking that journey with you.
